Camp Michigania
The people associated with Camp Michigania had a great influence on me. The camp, established by the University of Michigan Alumni Association, is a family camp for people and children of all ages. This camp was a significant part of my professional development because my time serving others was lead by my passions: physical fitness, nature, and of course, children.
Kids Camp Staff 2011
During my first summer at Michigania, I was a child care counselor. I worked with children 0-6 years old, including patients of Mott Children's Hospital who were sponsored to attend a week of camp. One of my favorite parts about this job was watching children experience new things everyday. From sailing, to swimming, to holding exotic animals, the children's curiosity lead their learning. Participating in those teachable moments was unforgettable. |
Nature Center Staff 2012
I was a part of the Nature Center Staff my second summer at Michigania. My responsibilities included leading educational hikes for adults and children, engaging children's' groups in lessons and activities that taught them about the environment, and teaching campers 7 years and older how to rock polish. While working in and out of the center, safety, environmental content, and fun were my priorities. I enhanced my knowledge of plants, animals, and Northern Michigan's environment. Using creative ways to teach it to people of all ages helped me develop many valuable skills. |
Fitness Instructor 2013
As the fitness instructor at Camp Michigania, I integrated a children's fitness program that I designed based on the developmental needs of the age groups: toddlers, 5-6 year olds, 7-9 year olds, and preteens. I engaged toddlers in children's yoga., instructed a dance class for girls 7, 8, and 9 years old; taught five Zumba classes per week with people of all ages and abilities as a licensed Zumba Instructor. I also designed and instructed an abdominal muscles course and a strength and conditioning course. The best part of the job was working with people of all ages, encouraging them to stay fit, work hard, and enjoy themselves! |
