International Experience
Nicaragua
In 2010, I travelled to Nicaragua with the Alma College Varsity Volleyball Team. We competed against volleyball teams native to Nicaragua and taught volleyball clinics to local high school students. We volunteered at local primary schools and orphanages creating games, helping with schoolwork, and showing compassion towards the children in need. This experience encouraged my decision to earn my Early Childhood Endorsement. |
China
In 2011, I took a history course through Alma College that made a three-week trip to China. We flew into Shanghai, took a train South to Nanjng, then West to Xi'an. We continued to travel East through several ancient cities and ended our adventure in Beijing. This was a challenging and exciting experience because we were conversing with the local people in order to learn about the Chinese history and culture of each city we engaged ourselves in. One of my favorite memories from this trip is my encounter with a young girl. There was a beautiful globe in our hotel. While her family and my class were waiting to be checked in, I pointed to where I was from "the mitten." I used my hand to gesture how I show where I'm from as well. She smiled, tried to speak and then spun the globe. She pointed to the West side of China. It was heartwarming to be able to connect with a child of another culture. |
